Shane R. Saum for Lago Vista City Council Place 1

July 6, 2023

This week, I had the pleasure of walking in our City parade celebrating our freedom with my neighbors and enjoying a great July 4th. One of the greatest freedoms we enjoy in our Country is the ability to participate in our elections, not just as voters, but as candidates.

As I was able to see so many of the hard working families in our community along that parade, I knew that I once again want to volunteer to serve Lago Vista and work to continue improving this beautiful community. I am excited to announce my intention to file to run for Lago Vista City Council Place 1 when filing opens on July 22nd.

After 10 years of working in and around the Texas legislature, I know how to be a true public servant and represent my community and their needs first. To serve, is to listen first. As this is just my announcement of my intentions to run, I will gladly share more on my policy ideas with the community after I file, but more importantly I am always prepared to learn from the citizens of Lago what is important to you and what your ideas are on improving our community. Please reach out and I will do my best to come and learn more from you in the community. I am committed to continuing to educate myself on our community so I can better serve Lago Vista.

As a Chief of Staff in the Texas House of Representatives, I worked closely with city leaders throughout a rural district facing many of the same issues Lago Vista is tackling today. We are a small, but growing community in crucial need of water infrastructure expansion and improvements. With that growth, we also need to ensure our roads are safe for our citizens and their families to travel on. As a member of the Lago Vista Economic Development Advisory Committee, I am always thinking about how we can continue to support our local businesses and encourage new ones. While we focused on our local community, the Legislature recently passed multiple anti-local bills that make it harder for our local officials to manage our unique challenges. We must fight to maintain local control.

A City Council is a team of volunteer public servants, each with their own skill sets they have offered to put to use for their community. One of my greatest skill sets I believe can be a good fit on this council, is my experience with the State and my understanding of how to leverage state resources while working with the Legislature to inform them on the importance of local control. We need to work closely with the Texas Water Development Board and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality as we work on our water infrastructure. We need to strengthen our relationships with our State Representative and Senator to get more help from TxDOT and the County on some of our roads. Together we can be loud enough to utilize every resource available to us to tackle our most pressing issues.

I hope I can earn the opportunity to serve you and I look forward to meeting you all as this campaign gets started!
